In Rogue Forces by Dale Brown, the author reintroduces Retired General Patrick McLanahan and a few other characters that Brown has created in his previous books. Set in a time of conflict, President Joseph Gardner orders pulls out the U.S. Forces out of Iraq-on his first day in office and no questions asked to boot. But as soon as the U.S. Forces are completely pulled out, the situation in Iraq becomes heated once again and Scion Aviation International-a privately-owned firm (by former President Kevin Martindale and McLanahan, himself) commissioned by the Pentagon to patrol over northern Iraq-is left to handle the situation.
Dale Brown's newest novel is a reminiscent of his first few books and it entices his fans back. Unlike his other recent works, this new book brings reality back to Earth and makes it more believable. The arrival of Brown's old characters-now given new positions in his world-makes it a familiar ground to step into. The story is fast-paced and it leaves you breathless by the time you finish it. I had to stop everything and read Rogue Forces because once you open the book, you can't stop flipping the page until the end. Brown is a master of injecting his knowledge of the air force and this shows through Jon Masters-his very own techie geek.
Perhaps one of the reasons why I picked up another one of his novels was because this book is a little closer to home. He puts the ever-popular Iraq-Iran-U.S. conflict and adds his signature to it. He gives us a taste of technological advances that could still be a little ahead of our time but we've always loved inventing gadgets and believing they were true (it's the child in all of us, really). These things fuel our imagination and make it a little more possible to invent. That and who knows; those gadgets might already be present in our time-we just don't know it. Rogue Forces by Dale Brown has brought back my love for his books (and for gadgetry) and I am sure this book will be perfect even if you are a first-time reader of his works.
