Reap the Wild Wind: Stratification #1 by Julie E. Czerneda is the prequel to "The Trade Pact Universe" trilogy. If you've read that series, or even if you haven't, you'll want to explore the far future world of Cersi. The author is a biologist and it shows in her world building. She delivers a highly developed complex setting that feels real by putting abundant biological and technical detail into her worlds. She is also a gifted story teller with the ability to keep readers entertained.
Three diametrically different races coexist on Cersi - the telepathic, humanoid Om'ray, the slug-like Oud and the tall, spindly Tikitik. They maintain peace by enforcing an ironclad agreement that says NOTHING MUST CHANGE. But things do change when an alien ship makes contact. The delicate balance of Cersi is destroyed and the Om'ray suffer tragic losses. One of the Yena clan, Aryl Sarc, is forced to confront the strangers in an attempt to discover their true purpose. This is a coming of age story for Aryl as she and another young Om'ray, Enris, must deal with the dangerous changes triggered by the coming of the Human intruders.
This fascinating story, with several intriguing subplots, focuses on themes of exploration, knowledge and freedom. Good use of dialogue, descriptions and emotion emphasizes the differences that separate alien cultures and brings to life emotionally compelling characters that readers will really care about. A glossary helps readers keep track of the numerous characters and effective prose brings them to life. This book is highly recommended for those who like stories of other worlds and alien cultures.
